Spring Jigging with Detroit River Walleye Charters

The Detroit River offers one of the best Walleye fisheries in the country. Fish in massive numbers migrate up the Detroit River from Lake Erie in the spring and the result is spectacular fishing both for size and quantity. The Walleye fishing begins in late March with ice-out on the Detroit River and lasts until the end of May. 10lb walleye are caught virtually every day on the river. 4 to 8lb Walleye rarely receives a look at the docks. A 15.15lb Walleye was caught in the Detroit River spring of 2004. A trophy of a lifetime is possible everyday.

The rule of thumb for Detroit River Walleye is Big Fish early in the run and numbers near the end. Pick a date in the middle (Mid April) can give you the opportunity for both. If water conditions are good catching a limit of Walleye is not a problem.

Vertical jigging is the preferred method for Detroit River Walleye fishing. While the method is simple, a lift and drop presentation, many beginners take a while to get the hang of it. Current and wind often make the technique challenging. Let us know if you have never fished with the vertical jigging method before hand and we will give you some homework lesson that will make your day on the water more productive and enjoyable. We can accommodate up to three anglers and guide, per boat, on Walleye trips in the Detroit River.
